In Washington, D.C., domestic violence is divided into three categories: “intimate partner violence”, “intrafamily violence”, and “interpersonal violence”. “Intimate partner violence” includes acts that are committed or threatened to be committed by an abuser upon a victim to whom the abuser is or was married; is or was in a domestic partnership; or is or was in a romantic, dating, or sexual relationship. “Intrafamily violence” includes acts that are committed or threatened to be committed by an abuser upon a victim to whom the abuser is related by blood, adoption, legal custody, marriage, domestic partnership, or with whom the abuser has a child in common. “Interpersonal violence” includes acts that are committed or threatened to be committed by an abuser upon a victim with whom the abuser shares or has shared a mutual residence; or who is or was married to, in a domestic partnership with, divorced or separated from, or in a romantic, dating, or sexual relationship with another person who is or was married to, in a domestic partnership with, divorced or separated from, or in a romantic, dating, or sexual relationship with the abuser.
