Child Support Lawyers in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

Children have the right to benefit from the incomes of both parents. Child support payments help pay for the costs associated with raising a child. Child support is a court-ordered payment requiring the non-custodial parent to pay for child-related expenses to the custodial parent. A court also may order child support to be paid when parents share custody of a child. Typically, child support payments must be made until the child reaches the age of majority.

Child support payments are based on state guidelines and the amount typically is based on the parents' incomes and the needs of the children. The court will usually review the financial statements submitted by the parties and any other relevant financial information that lists all sources of income and expenses before rendering a final order of child support.  In certain circumstances, the court may make an upward or downward adjustment of the presumptively correct amount of child support based on the state's child support guidelines.
