On July 14, 2011, Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, advised that twelve (12) conditions involving severe heart diseases have been added to the list of Compassionate Allowances. The number of Compassionate Allowances now totals 100.
Compassionate Allowances are a way to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that clearly meet the Administration’s standards for disability benefits. These conditions primarily include certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children. Compassionate Allowances allow the agency to make speedy decisions for the most obviously disabled individuals.
